The Cranes Are Flying
In the first days of the war, Boris volunteers for the front without even having time to say goodbye to Veronika. Soon after, Veronika loses her parents during a bombing and is left homeless. To save the girl from despair, Boris's family takes her into their home. After some time, Boris's cousin, Mark, by deceit and force, secures Veronika's favor, and she marries him, feeling broken and as though she has betrayed herself.
