1939. Mitya Vasiliev receives a puppy. His mother is unhappy with the gift because the pet howls loudly and persistently, earning him the nickname Caruso. A few years later, the Great Patriotic War and the siege of Leningrad began. Everyone, including Mitya's family, is starving, and the dog, sensing his owners’ suffering, ventures for prey through a minefield.
After a while, hunger drives Mitya to cross over to the enemy side with his dog.
But one day, they are spotted by a German patrolman.
